Mercy in the Margins (July – 2017)

Grace and peace to you all,

I am deeply thankful for Christians and church families who are considering to partner with me in being a missionary pastor to those who are low-income, struggling with addictions, and have experienced great loss. My heart is among those who live in the margins of the community. Continue reading

Matthew 4:18-22

I heard that this last Sunday, Pastor Beau of Emmaus Road Church focused his sermon on these five verses. I also was told that he introduced this text by illustrating God’s calling upon men in the Old Testament, like Abraham, Moses, and Elisha.

I do believe that these verses are crucial for the foundation of vibrant Christian discipleship in Idaho Falls.  Here are some questions related to the text. Continue reading

Matthew 4:12-17

I will be out of town tomorrow and the following Sunday.  So I will be missing Pastor Beau’s upcoming messages in Matthew.  But my heart is in this discipleship, gospel manual in the New Testament.  Unfortunately, I will not be able to listen to Pastor Beau’s sermon on Matthew 4:19.  Incidentally, Real Life Ministries up in northern Idaho builds a strong, working definition from that verse on what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. Matthew 4:1-11

Today, at Emmaus Road Church, Pastor Beau Floyd opened up the discussion at our assembly with this question:  What was your best and worst meal that you have eaten?  He and others shared some humorous stories. Then we jumped into the biblical story, which Beau titled, “God’s Testing, Jesus’ Spiritual Victory“.

Typically, I have heard how the three temptations are placed within the matrix of the (1) lust of the flesh, (2) lust of the eyes, and (3) the pride of life (I John 2:16). But Beau took us back to the great Shema (rightful context) in Deuteronomy 6. Continue reading

Matthew 3:13-17

Today, at Emmaus Road Church, Pastor Beau Floyd opened up the discussion at our assembly with this question:  What is baptism?

I enjoyed immensely watching Jeff Cale take the microphone and share his testimony of God’s grace in his life.  Two and a half weeks ago, he was released from the Bonneville County Jail.   Continue reading

Matthew 3:1-12

Today, at Emmaus Road Church, Pastor Beau Floyd preached “Making a Way to Jesus” from Matthew 3:1-12 and connected the text to us in five ways: (1) A Messenger and a Way, (2) Being Weird, (3) Baptism and Repentance, (4) False “Devotion”, and (5) The Coming One.

He began his message by asking us, “How do you prepare the way for people to meet Jesus?”   Continue reading

Matthew 2:13-23

Today, at Emmaus Road Church, Pastor Beau Floyd preached on the theme that “The Battle and the Victory are God’s” out of Matthew 2:13-23.  He divided the passage into three themes:  (1) God Protects, (2) Spiritual Opposition, and (3) God Directs.

My questions related to the text . . . Continue reading
