Candlewood Suites

001

Candlewood Suites is situated on the banks of the Snake River and set up for the business person who might need to live for an extended time in Idaho Falls.  The rooms provide well-stocked kitchenettes.

008

And there are good laundry machines to wash your clothes.  It is an ideal place to hunker down while on a business trip.

The fitness gym is small but suitable, allowing for 24 hour access.

There is a lending locker in the fitness center where one can obtain anything from  kitchen supplies to board games to highlight markers.  It’s a nice service to their patrons.

006

The Candlewood cupboard room off to the side of the front lobby acts like your walk-in pantry where you can purchase food items from 50 cents to four dollars.

Also, behind the front office desk, there is a lending library where you can pick up movies or music CD’s.

Outside, one can relax and read in the gazebo.

004

Or step up to the water’s edge and enjoy the view.

003

There are restaurants within walking distance.  My wife and I walked the Snake River greenbelt past the art museum and power plant and through Sportsman’s Island to Smitty’s for an evening meal.  It was a beautiful evening on the river.

A Branch of Righteousness

Years ago, we had a severe wind storm that demolished a sweet plum tree in our backyard.  But from the roots came a shoot, and this shoot has grown into a new, full tree.

007

This backyard story of hope through new growth reminds of me what I read this morning in The NKJV Daily Bible:

“In those days and at that time I will cause to grow up to David a Branch of righteousness; He shall execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.  In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell safely.  And this is the name by which she will be called:

‘THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.’ – Jeremiah 33:15-16

The Fundamentals of Christianity in Idaho Falls

Four hundred and eighty years ago, William Tyndale translated and published from the Greek, the epistle of I John (among the rest of the N.T.), for the English speaking people of the world.  And in doing so, he was strangled and burned at the stake.
Tyndale wrote this in part of his introduction to I John.  He talked about how the apostle John led us to a middle way:
So fighteth this epistle both against them that will be saved by their own good works, and also against them that will be saved by a faith that hath no lust to do works at all, and keepeth us in the middle way, that we believe in Christ to be saved by his works only, and then to know that it is our duty for that kindness, to prepare ourselves to do the commandment of God, and to love every man his neighbor as Christ loved him, seeking with our own works God’s honour and our neighbours’ wealth only, and trusting for eternal life and for all that God hath promised us for Christ’s sake.
Isn’t this true?  Tyndale is not saying that Christianity is just orthodoxy (what we believe) alone.  Neither is it simply orthopraxy (what we do).  It is both–a Christian, who believes in Christ and His work alone for salvation, will live for Christ.  He will “lust” (passionately desire) to do works for the King.
Practically, all of us as a religious community in Idaho Falls, would profess to be Christians.  And even though this letter by the apostle John is almost 2,000 years old, it has direct relevance for our Christianity in this city.  There are three fundamentals:  (1) right belief about Jesus, (2) a holy life of service for Jesus in His church, and (3) love for the Lord’s people.  How can it be one without the other?  The Father’s children have all three because His seed is in them.
I am halfway through my study of I John.  The message is simple.  It is black and white.  It is genuine Christianity.

the Father’s kid

It is the Father’s love that took me, a child of the devil in Idaho Falls, and made me His kid.

Snakebite

The Snakebite Restaurant

Let me insert a short word on this restaurant because the establishment had its start on the River Parkway.  And now, the current chef and his waitress wife, operate across the river and a few blocks east into the historic downtown area on 401 Park.

My wife and I were taken here by some dear friends.  What a treat!  We ate sumptuously. Upon our waitress’s recommendation, I ordered and slurped up the hot pot pasta bowl of salmon, mussels, and shrimp.  Delicious flavor.

And then we topped it off with a big slice of chocolate cake.

Snakebite is a cozy, brick downtown establishment, featuring some tasty American dishes for the locals.  Nothin’ like a good, spicy bite a couple blocks walk from the Snake.

Rooted in Christ

10649728_851980051478988_4635046835159797945_n[1]

On September 14, Pastor Matt Swenson wrote on the Gethsemane Baptist Church facebook page:

PTL! This tree fell over & missed the church building! Thankfully, we know if you’re rooted firmly in Christ, you don’t have to worry about what the storms of life or trials bring. (Colossians 2:7) Join us today to grow! #idahofalls #church

As I think about “Roots by the River”, that passage in Colossians is a good one.

“As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving” (Colossians 2:6-7).

One Nation

One Nation (Idaho Falls Library Call Number – 306.0973 CARSON)

“What We Can All Do To Save America’s Future”

Publisher – Sentinel: New York, New York, 2014

Author – Ben Carson

Is this guy running for president or not?

At the beginning of his book, Carson writes, “I have been offered support from around the country and tremendous financial resources if I decide to run for national office.  But I have not felt called to run.  I suspect that there are many others who think logically and are interested in a political future who might be better candidates than myself.  Nevertheless, if I felt called by God to officially enter the world of politics, I certainly would not hesitate to do so.”

And then again at the end of his book, Carson concludes, “We must exercise our duty as responsible and informed citizens and actively shape the nation we desire by investing time, resources, and energy into choosing appropriate leaders who share our vision.  In some cases, we may even need to offer ourselves as candidates for public office.”

What do you think?  Will we soon see a “Carson for President 2016” banner in the air?

I liked reading his book.  He shares excerpts of his life story that I once watched in the television movie, Gifted Hands.  But more than just talking about his childhood anger, his mother’s grit, and the newfound freedom gained from reading books, he shares many insights on what he believes about the hot issues of the day.  He is a creationist.  He names the College of the Ozarks in Branson, Missouri as what a good education looks like.  He speaks with common sense, does not denigrate the job experience gained even in a minimum wage, and openly looks to the Bible for wisdom.  Especially from the book of Proverbs.  Bullseye.

So in my review of this book, I find it edifying to list for you his chapter headings with Proverbs that he includes in the book.

  1. Saving our Future – “Godliness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.” Proverbs 14:34
  2. Political Correctness – “Those who love to talk will experience the consequences, for the tongue can kill or nourish life.” Proverbs 18:21
  3. Elitism – “Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18
  4. Ignorance and Forgetfulness – “Throw out the mocker, and fighting, quarrels, and insults will disappear.  Anyone who loves a pure heart and gracious speech is the king’s friends.  The Lord preserves knowledge, but he ruins the plans of the deceitful. ” Proverbs 22:10-12
  5. Bigotry – “It is sin to despise one’s neighbors; blessed are those who help the poor.” Proverbs 14:21
  6. No Winners in Political Fighting – “A troublemaker plants seeds of strife: gossip separates the best of friends.” Proverbs 16:28
  7. Enslaving Our Children–Don’t Sell The Future – “Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren, but the sinner’s wealth passes to the godly.” Proverbs 13:22
  8. Pushing Back – “If you fail under pressure your strength is not very great.  Rescue those who are unjustly sentenced to death: don’t stand back and let them die.  Don’t try to avoid responsibility by saying you didn’t know about it.  For God knows all hearts, and He sees you.  He keeps watch over your soul, and He knows you knew!  And He will judge all people according to what they have done.” Proverbs 24:10-12
  9. Respectful Disagreement – “So discuss the matter with them [your neighbors] privately.  Don’t tell anyone else, or others may accuse you of gossip.  Then you will never regain your good reputation.” Proverbs 25:9-10
  10. The Art of Compromise – “Without wise leadership, a nation falls; with many counselors, there is safety.” Proverbs 11:14
  11. Becoming Informed – “Only simpletons believe everything they are told! The prudent carefully consider their steps.” Proverbs 14:15
  12. Wisdom and Knowledge – “How much better to get wisdom than gold, and understanding than silver!” Proverbs 16:16
  13. My Brother’s Keeper – “Those who oppress the poor insult their Maker, but those who help the poor honor Him” Proverbs 14:31
  14. Without a Vision – “When people do not accept divine guidance, they run wild.  But whoever obeys the law is happy.” Proverbs 29:18
  15. Role Models – “Do not carouse with drunkards and gluttons, for they are on their way to poverty.  Too much sleep clothes a person with rags.  Listen to your father, who gave you life, and don’t despise your mother’s experience when she is old.” Proverbs 23:20-22
  16. The Origin of Morality – “Those who follow the right path fear the Lord; those who take the wrong path despise Him.” Proverbs 14:2
  17. Take Courage – “Those who fear the Lord are secure; He will be a place of refuge for their children.” Proverbs 14:26

Consider Carson’s challenge.  Poke your nose in the book of Proverbs.
