Mercy in the Margins (November – 2019)

It has been a whirlwind of missionary activity in eastern Idaho over the last couple of months.  Each Sunday morning, I drive southwest to the Shepherd of the Falls Lutheran Church in American Falls to share a sermon from the Gospels. I thank God for the encouragement of this faithful church family who gathers in the building of Willow Bay Baptist Church. On Sunday afternoons, I am co-pastoring Providence Downtown Church with Pastor Warren Cuppy.  We meet for worship, prayer, and study at 4:00 pm in Valerie Hall next to the North HiWay Cafe.  And our Wednesday night, mid-week services are 7:00 pm in the New Destiny Ministries Hub next door to the front office of the Idaho Falls Rescue Mission.  Throughout the week, I am engaged in Bible studies, prayer meetings, and one-on-one discipleship with others to pursue a strong walk with Jesus, often having conversations with those who come straight off the streets or from jail. My heart will bounce back and forth from grief to joy as I walk with others.  But my trust is fully in the power of Christ’s salvation to do the transforming work in men and women’s hearts. Lastly, I spend a good portion of time in connecting with pastors in eastern Idaho to strengthen kingdom partnerships. I could not do any of this without God’s grace and your ongoing prayers. Together, we seek to magnify Jesus as King in this mission field.

Here are some of the highlights from September and October:

  • September 4: Ministry luncheon; first Wednesday evening service for Providence Downtown in the New Destiny Ministries Hub

Would you like to contribute financially on a monthly basis to my missionary work?  Here are a couple of ways: (1) Send the contribution to Emmaus Road Church and specifically mark it as “missionary fund for Todd Wood”, or (2) You are welcome to give directly to me.  Thank you so much!

On the home front:

Once again, our four young-adult children have jumped into the pool of academia. Elon is enrolled in the MBA program at Idaho State University and hoping to be accepted in the Scholarship for Service program through NIATEC in January 2020.  Hannah is back at Bob Jones University to finish her senior year for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Mariah is in her junior year at the University of Idaho with a double major in philosophy and sociology (criminology emphasis) and a double minor in justice studies and journalism. We think she would like to be a judge someday. And our high school football player, Micaiah, is tackling a full load of AP classes for his senior year at Skyline High School.

Prayer requests:

  1. Pray that I might obtain a reliable vehicle with good gas mileage as I travel around eastern Idaho.
  2. Pray for our family, my wife and kids.
  3. Pray for our little church plant, Providence Downtown Church.
  4. Pray for the Idaho Falls Rescue Mission.
  5. Pray for the Shepherd of the Falls Lutheran Church family in American Falls
  6. Pray for the advancement of Christ’s Kingdom in East Idaho.

My four current ministry objectives:

  1. Be a servant missionary-pastor with Providence Downtown Church that specifically ministers to the incarcerated, the addicted, the homeless, and impoverished.  It is a church ministering and bringing mercy to those in the margins.
  2. Minister as a pastor with the Idaho Falls Rescue Mission.
  3. Pulpit supply and pastoral encouragement to the Shepherd of the Falls Lutheran Church family.
  4. Be a blessing to the pastors in Idaho Falls and throughout the region through the Eastern Idaho Pastors Coalition (EIPC)

May Jesus reign as King!

roots by the river,

Todd Wood (downtown missionary)
