Depression

depression

  1. Are you introspective and hard on yourself?
  2. Do you hunger for words of encouragement?
  3. Do you carry guilt?
  4. Do you think you need to be punished?
  5. Do you nurture your failures with thoughts of increasing proportion?
  6. Have you felt your contributions are useless?
  7. Do you fluctuate between the emotions of great, personal importance to a deep self-pity?
  8. Are you crying?
  9. Are you often physically weary?
  10. Are you wondering if God even cares?

As you look around, you see beautiful people, read successful stories, and listen to the laughter.  But all the wonderful things around you only seem to accentuate your lack.  Your despair.  Your life looks like the vacant field full of overgrown weeds or the discarded pile of lava rocks heaped at the end of a farmer’s field.  Your thoughts are dark, rain clouds with no chance of spring showers and a rainbow.

You might feel like you are all alone.  But you are not.

Here is a simple poem from a man named William Cowper who tried to take his own life:

God moves in a mysterious way

His wonders to perform;

He plants His footsteps in the sea

And rides upon the storm.

Deep in unfathomable mines

Of never failing skill

He treasures up His bright designs

And works His sovereign will.

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;

The clouds ye so much dread

Are big with mercy and shall break

In blessings on your head.

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,

But trust Him for His grace;

Behind a frowning providence

He hides a smiling face.

His purposes will ripen fast,

Unfolding every hour;

The bud may have a bitter taste,

But sweet will be the flower.

Fairfield Inn & Suites – Marriott

We received a $30 coupon-off the normal price to stay a night at the Fairfield Inn & Suites – Marriott on Broadway in Idaho Falls.

Nice place.  Relaxing.

Allison gave us a friendly greeting the minute we walked in the warm and cozy, orange and green lobby.  She gave us a key to inspect a room with a king-size bed.  I liked it immediately:  accent and dimmer lighting, temperature control, living room, jacuzzi tub, palm mitchell shampoo, flat screen televisions, music station, office area, and a comfortable, clean bed.

Later, when we checked in, we discovered that the pool had been emptied for a cleaning.  But the management had made arrangements that we could travel just down the street to the Residence Inn – Marriott on the banks of the Snake River and Falls.  They had a splendid pool with high arc splash features and the biggest hot tub that I have seen in Idaho Falls. My youngest boy and I had a blast.

Around 10:30 pm, we walked over to Kiwi Loco Yogurt.  The attendant gave us 32 ounces of cookies and cream yogurt for $3.71.  Not a bad deal, eh?

In the morning, the staff served a breakfast for champions:  (1) eggs topped with salsa, cheese, and onions, (2) biscuits and gravy, (3) bacon and seasoned potatoes, (4) blueberry muffins, (5) bagels and cream cheese.  The atmosphere is inviting; the juice drinks are refreshing, and the sun is shining.  With all the rain that Idaho Falls has been experiencing, this is a nice change for the city.

I did some Bible study in Ephesians on the outside patio.

For lunch, I recommend that you walk over to Famous Dave’s or the Olive Garden–try Pappardella Pescatore.  Slurp it up.  It’s good.

Time!

Title – Time!  105 Ways to Get More Done Every Workday

Author – David Cottrell

Publisher – Dallas:  CornerStone Leadership Institute, 2010

Cottrell covers the basics of how to use your time wisely in an average working day.  From the minute you get up to heading back home, he provides tips in order to eliminate waste.  He touches on the use of computers, email, phone calls, and paper.  The latter helped me personally because I am a paper pack rat.  At the moment, my home office is pretty cluttered.  Brian Tracy states, “Take a good look at your desk and your office.  Ask yourself, ‘What kind of person works in an environment like that?’  The cleaner and neater your work environment, the more positive, productive and confident you feel.”

Four chapters are given over to planning, starting, running, and ending a meeting.  The suggestions will remove frustration and energize board members.

Authur Brisbane concludes, “Among the aimless you often hear talk about ‘killing time.’  People who are constantly killing time are really killing their own chances in life.  Those who are destined to become successful are those who make time and use it wisely.”

You Don’t Need a Title to be a Leader

Title – You Don’t Need a Title to be a Leader

Author – Mark Sanborn

Publisher – Colorado Springs: WaterBrook Press, 2006

Sanborn sprinkles biblical principles throughout this little book, stressing that servant leadership is far different than a “title” top-down management.  At the core of his explanation is six principles:

  • the power of self-mastery
  • the power of focus
  • power with people
  • the power of persuasive communication
  • the power of execution
  • the power of giving

The topic of focus emphasized the activity of squirrels, the dangers of drifting, drifting vs. waiting, the importance of agendas, prioritization, and living intentionally.  Identify your “MVP” activities (Most Valuable and Profitable).

In the section, “power with people”, Sanborn stresses character, competence, and connection.  And in establishing character, he quotes Tom Peters,

If you don’t know something, say so.

Don’t make promises you can’t keep.

Underpromise and overdeliver.

Be careful to create realistic expectations.

In regards to the power of giving, the author introduced me to Bob Haverstick and his non-profit, Never Too Late.  I think it would be cool to do something like this. A great, big-hearted idea.

Human Trafficking

human trafficking

A friend today mentioned to me a documentary called The Abolitionists.

I got online and watched these youtube videos.

  1. The Abolitionists
  2. Glenn Beck:  Operation Underground Railroad
  3. Cliff Graham and Tim Ballard on the Glenn Beck TV Program

And then I checked out Tim Ballard‘s website – O.U.R. Rescue.

Saving children in the war on human trafficking–this is a cause worth the fight.

Peace

peace

The Jewish people have a beautiful word that is multi-dimensional for describing a well-ordered heart.  It’s shalom.  The closest equivalent that we have in the English language is the word, peace.

Peace is a rare commodity.  We have divisions in our places of employment, barriers in our neighborhoods, alienation in our family units, and fractures in our hearts.  We acknowledge our lack of peace and seek to obtain it through various means.  But it remains elusive, always just beyond our grasp.

What is that you have tried in order to bring tranquility to the turmoil? Music amid the static?  Stillness in the storm?

The answer lies in a Person.  This Person can break down any wall.  He can rescue any troubled heart.  He is able to bring about the impossible.  Right here in Idaho.

No, it is not one of the Avengers.

He is so much better than any superhero ever imagined and placed on the big screen.  He is the perfect combination of love, power, and wisdom.

His name is Jesus.

“He Himself is our peace.”

Where the Red Fern Grows

Title – Where the Red Fern Grows

Author – Wilson Rawls

Publisher – New York:  Yearling, 1961

Red Fern

This sculpture of Billy, Old Dan, and Little Ann stands in front of the Idaho Falls Public Library.  Where the Red Fern Grows is famous in Idaho Falls.  I just finished reading it with my boy, Micaiah.

I enjoyed the book except for this one quote:

I remembered a passage from the Bible my mother had read to us: “God helps those who help themselves.”

Where do you see that passage in the Bible?

Riches in Idaho Falls

I have been doing a study in the book of Ephesians.   The first three chapters unfold “the riches of His grace.”  It is staggering to consider what has been bestowed upon me as a sinner in southeastern Idaho.

Union with Jesus Christ is at the heart of my wealth.

Tony Reinke brought to my attention this quote by John Newton:

To know Jesus is the shortest description of true grace; to know Him better is the surest growth in grace; to know Him perfectly is eternal life.

Amen.
